Poles Permit Take Down of Hijacked Planes

WARSAW, Poland - An anti-terrorism law that allows Polish authorities to shoot down hijacked planes as a last resort took effect Thursday, part of efforts to protect the country from attacks similar to those of Sept. 11.

The law allows either the defense minister or the head of the Polish Air Force to order the shooting down of civilian or military aircraft whose hijackers defy orders to land.
